New Microwave

About a couple of weeks ago the microwave decided to stop working.  The light would turn on and it would still make some noise, but it was obviously not microwaving anything.  Since it was an over the stove unit, it wasn’t a matter of going to the local appliance store and picking one up.  I didn’t want to pay a lot for a new microwave and I wanted it to fit with the kitchen.  Lowe’s had a Samsung 30-inch, 1.5 Cu. Ft. Microwave on their website that would fit the bill.  Unfortunately, they didn’t have it at the store right down the street from the house.  After ordering on-line and adding a gift card to the payment, I printed out the receipt and went to pick it up in Garner.

This morning my lovely little wife helped me remove the old microwave and install the new one.  It required unscrewing two long screws from the top and a little tilt and left to get off the old unit.  After installing the charcoal filter and setting the vents to recycle the air, since we don’t have an external vent, the new one was ready to install.  Luckily microwaves have standard mounting brackets, so I didn’t have to install a new wall mounting bracket or drill new holes in the upper cabinet for the power cord and support screws.  After getting the lower bracket holds on with the tile and lift method, I had Lisa hold up the microwave as I screwed in the bolts from the top.  Before lunch time the new microwave was in.  Since we had to move the stove, it was a good time to clean behind and around the stove.   A little minor spring cleaning.

The biggest difference between the old unit and the new Samsung is how the plate lays inside.  The old unit had the plate above the bottom, the new one is completely recessed into the bottom, which gives a little more room.  There also isn’t a rack in the Samsung.  I probably never used the rack anyway, so I don’t see it as a loss.  With these two changes, the Samsung seems larger than the old GE unit.  The buttons on the Samsung don’t seem as responsive, but I am hoping that means they’ll handle wear and tear much better.  Another change was that the Samsung clock setting didn’t require PM/AM choice or the date.  I never understood why the GE need a Date.  You could never see the date on the display, not was there an option to delay microwaving something until Tuesday.  Overall, we like the new microwave and now we don’t have to use the stove to reheat food.
